Write on Sports to Recognize Noteworthy Honorees at Upcoming Evening of Champions Event

Network Sportscasters, N.J. Educator and Student Will be Recognized for Their Support and Participation with the Nonprofit Organization

August 18, 2023 Jersey City, N.J. – Write on Sports (WoS) will hold its Evening of Champions Event, the annual fundraiser and 18th anniversary celebration, on Tuesday, October 3rd at Maritime Parc, 84 Audrey Zapp Drive in Liberty State Park in Jersey City. The event, which is open to the public, will recognize the accomplishments of the nonprofit organization’s 2023 Literacy Champions and broadcasters Dave Popkin (Sirius XM, CBS Sports Network) and former NFL player Louis Riddick (ESPN), plus the 2023 Educator of Excellence Jennifer Blume and All-Star Student Maya Wyche.

Peter King of NBC Sports, a WoS trustee, returns as emcee. Attendees will include several students from this year’s programs as well as alumni, teachers and representatives from WoS affiliates. Ticket, sponsorship and event information can be found online at writeonsports.givesmart.com

About the honorees

Dave Popkin has been a longtime guest journalist and supporter of Write on Sports, donating his time to mentor WoS students for over a decade. The veteran sportscaster is entering his 21st season as a commentator with the Seton Hall Basketball radio network; he has also called men’s and women’s college soccer, women’s basketball, and college baseball on FS1, and eight different sports for both CN8 and MSG Varsity among his many other credentials

“I’m proud to be associated with Write on Sports and to be honored in this way for my small part in the organization” said Popkin. “There’s nothing like lighting the spark for a student and watching them develop skills and confidence that will help them in life. These students just need that motivation and to see what’s possible.”

Louis Riddick embodies the guiding principles of Write on Sports: to embrace opportunity and put in the hard work to achieve success in life. First an NFL player and then scout turned director of pro personnel and now a broadcaster for ESPN, Riddick has achieved great success in every phase of his life. For ESPN, he is currently a leading NFL and college football analyst, including working the NFL Draft each year, college football games each week, and appearing on multiple studio shows regularly. He originally joined ESPN in May 2013 as an NFL Front Office Insider.

“Louis is a perfect person to honor because nothing, ever, was handed to him–either in his football career or in his post-football life as an analyst and news media member. Our kids will get great lessons of perseverance and belief from one of the admired voices in sports media today,” said Peter King.

Jennifer Blume has been working with Write on Sports since 2016. She leads the WoS After-School Program in West Orange and teaches in the summer camp at Montclair State University.

“I strive to create a community of learners that nurtures this growth in a positive, fun environment. Working with Write on Sports allows me to teach students’ real life skills that can help them develop positive feelings about themselves and their futures,” she said.

Maya Wyche, a rising 8th grader, has participated in WoS programming since 2020, in summer camps, workshops and the after-school program in West Orange.

“Maya is a determined student with a positive attitude. Her love of learning is inspiring to those around her,” remarked Jennifer Blume, who has worked with Maya during WoS programs. “Her dedication to Write on Sports is impressive! She tackles challenges with a can-do attitude and I have no doubt that she can accomplish anything she puts her mind to. A drive like hers can change the world!”
