Write on Sports Teacher Highlight – Jen Blume

Every month, Write on Sports will highlight a member of our staff, a student, or a graduate to hear more about how Write on Sports has influenced them.

This month, we interviewed Jen Blume, a teacher at Edison Middle School, who has taught at the Montclair State University (MSU) camp and after-school program since 2015.

How did you get involved with Write on Sports?

I joined WoS in 2015 and have provided a WoS club at Edison Central Six in West Orange as well as worked summers with the students at Montclair State University. I got involved with WoS through another teacher at my school who had been working with WoS for many years.

When not working with WoS, what do you do?

In my free time I like to read, enjoy the beach, and attend my son’s games.  Often for the basketball and baseball games I am the score keeper and keep the book.  This is a really fun way for me to stay involved!

What is a stand-out memory from your time at camp or after school program?

My favorite memory is when I see my students get excited about writing an article about a guest they just interviewed. That sparkle in their eye isn’t always seen in my class, unfortunately, so when I do see it, it makes me proud and happy that I helped teach them to write.

Do you have a favorite sport and team?

I am a Yankees and Patriots fan. Where is your favorite place to watch a game? I usually watch football at home with my sons and husband on the Red Zone channel, which is an awesome way to watch multiple games with no commercials. My husband is a Giants fan and my son and I like the Patriots, so this way everyone is happy!

Where do you get your sports news?

I get most of my sports news from family discussions and ESPN, which is constantly on in my house. WoS is a great way to teach students that English offers many opportunities and if they can mix sports with their knowledge of English, Why Not!

Who is your favorite writer?

Reading is definitely a favorite pastime of mine. I love reading the macabre, so Edgar Allen Poe and Steven King rank at the top of my list. Another favorite however is Dr. Seuss who has written many words that I like to live by…

What is your favorite motto or quote?

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
