Literacy in Action: 20 years of Write on Sports
Write on Sports(WoS) is a literacy program that develops students’ writing skills, critical thinking abilities, and self-confidence using the tools of journalism—both in the classroom and beyond. Founded in 2005 by former Associated Press Sports Editor Byron Yake, WoS has grown from a single summer writing camp to year-round literacy enrichment including summer writing camps, after-school programs and workshops.
What an incredible journey these 20 years have been!
From a class of just 24 students, WoS has reached thousands, guiding many toward careers in journalism. Our alumni have written for The New York Times, Sports Illustrated and even won Emmy Awards. Last year, we expanded beyond sports, launching Write on Arts and opening doors for even more young writers.
Help secure the future of WoS.
To secure the future of our programs, we invite you to contribute to the WoS 20th Anniversary Legacy Fund. Our goal is to raise the critical funds needed for program expansion. The proceeds will be distributed over the next three years.
The minimum contribution is $15,000, but we urge you to consider a leadership gift of $20,000 symbolizing 20 years of impact. Donations are fully tax-deductible and can be made via cash, donor-advised funds, or appreciated stock.
Please reach out to maryellen@writeonsports.org with any questions about this philanthropic opportunity.
The need is urgent. Invest in literacy.
Students, especially those in under-resourced communities, are not developing the literacy skills they need to succeed. At the same time, funding for education programs is being substantially decreased. That’s where WoS needs your generous support. Please donate to the Write on Sports 20th Anniversary Legacy Fund.
